I moved to North Carolina from Nashville, Tennessee over thirty years ago. I am blessed to live in Sandy Mush surrounded by beautiful people, animals and land. Much of my early work after graduate school was in crisis counseling and teaching. For the past twenty-five years, I co-founded and managed a performing arts agency with my husband John Loyd.
My sisters and I learned basic sewing at an early age from my mother who was a tailor. She made most of our family’s clothing and taught us early to make our own clothes and items for our dolls. I was introduced to quilting from two of my sisters when we began gathering nearly twenty years ago, as women have for generations, to chat and sew.
Quilt making has become a passion. I make quilted items of all sizes. My work draws on traditional and modern block patterns to piece mainly original designs. I machine piece the quilts and both machine and hand quilt the finished work made from cotton fabrics and batting.
Recently, my sister Gayle and I started Big Sandy Sisters Quilting to encourage bringing the beauty and love of handmade work into daily lives. We focus on creating keepsake quality pieces for use in the home. Much of our work focuses on baby quilts, lap quilts, wall hangings and table top pieces.
