Jan Helm (M.A., M.B.A.) grew up in Southern California and as a child showed talent for graphic art, music and dance. Classes in Ceramic Processes at Cal State University Long Beach gave her a good foundation, later augmented by more studio classes and work with experienced artists. Her work is inspired by nature, spiritual, and cultural influences. Janet has a fluid, creative, and original approach to forming, with attention to functionality. Her art emerges as she engages in the creative process at each stage of production: wheel throwing or hand building, trimming, decorating, firing, and glazing. In her words, "I believe art has a life of its own, and I allow it to flow through me. I hope the pieces evoke a personal experience in others, and that they will derive their own meaning from interacting with the work."
