Suzanne E. Saunders was born in upstate New York, and raised in Leicester, North Carolina. Her family goes back many generations in the Asheville/Leicester area.
Graduating from UNCA in 1993 with a BFA in her pocket, she moved to New Orleans and began selling her paintings to tourists and locals alike. Vibrant and surreal, her work consists mainly of acrylic and collage on wood and canvas, as well as murals. Saunders art has featured many elements of New Orleans and dream-like landscapes; however, she is truly a painter of all things. One of her other favorite mediums to paint with is enamel on switch plates, and to collage prints of her artwork on them, prolonging the life of her imagery in a functional manner.
Her paintings can be found across the globe as New Orleans has served as a major tourist destination for the arts for many, many years. Saunders’ paintings have been shown in many galleries, festivals, and venues, including 14 years in the highly juried New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. She has had recent shows in downtown Asheville at the 5 Walnut Bar and Tressa’s Jazz Club, and has been working on commissions.
Having returned to the area, Saunders currently resides in Leicester, NC with her husband Ashley who is a sculptor. Her work can be found online at www.suzannesaundersartwork.com and facebook/suzannesaundersartwork, and in person at: The Artist’s Market in New Orleans and the Great Artists Collective in the heart of the French Quarter.
